Biography
Born Broughton-in -Furness,1916, Philipson moved to Scotland with his family aged 14. Between 1936-40 he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art where he returned as Lecturer (1947), becoming Head of the Drawing and Painting Department (1960-82). During World War II he saw active service in India and Burma with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy (1973-1983) and in 1976 was knighted for his services to art. He forms a key member of the Edinburgh Group - with Redpath, Gillies, Maxwell, MacTaggart, Blackadder and Houston. A painter who grew increasingly cerebral and abstract as his career matured, Philipson probed evolution, the bases and manifestations of secular and religious authority, social nudity and sudden/aggesssive motion and violence. He employed strong colour combinations and heavy impasto. His work is of international significance and examples are held in public, corporate and private collections world-wide. |
