Biography
Along with Warhol, Lichtenstein and Rosenquist, Mel Ramos is a leading representative of American pop art. His early work was strongly influenced by popular comic strip heroes, witness his works in the exhibition 'Pop Goes The East' at the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, Texas in 1963. By the mid-1960's, he had turned to his signature depictions of single female figures in semi-erotic and humorous takes of pin-up girls and commercial adverising. Examples of his work are held by the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and leading museums/galleries throughout Europe. |
