Biography
Growing up in Cranleigh, Surrey, Watson was encouraged as a boy by the great bird artist, Archibald Thorburn. Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and St John's College, Oxford, and following war service, he began in the 1940's a series of artistic projects of birds in their habitat which led to exhibitions in Edinburgh, London and Oxford. In the 1960's, he undertook 96 pages of illustrations for Bruce Campbell's Oxford Book of British Birds. He was as much a scientific student of birds as their artist and published several books and papers with the hen harrier being a particular speciality. He was a founding member of the Society of Wildife Artists. |
